One of the main challenges in large public places is the need for flexible seating options. Folding chairs are a popular choice due to their versatility and easy storage. Taking this concept further, Shaohan Yang designed Pad to be a folding chair that can transform into a flat panel. This allows for efficient storage and stacking, saving valuable space.
The most distinctive feature of Pad is its foldability. Made from teak wood, this chair can be folded into a flat sheet and stacked on top of each other when not in use. This not only saves space but also provides a neat and organized solution for storage. When needed, Pad unfolds easily to form a comfortable chair, providing a practical seating option.
The choice of teak wood as the material for Pad was deliberate. Teak wood is known for its stability, minimal deformation, and resistance to bending. It undergoes professional drying treatment, ensuring its durability and wear-resistance. With its distinctive characteristics of being anticorrosive and insect-proof, teak wood is an ideal material for a folding chair like Pad.
Pad has specific dimensions both when folded and unfolded. Before folding, it measures 41cm in length, 44cm in width, and 86cm in height. After folding, it reduces to a compact size of 41cm in length, 4cm in width, and 86cm in height. This compact form makes it easy to store and transport, making it suitable for various settings.
The design process for Pad started in September 2020 in Milan and was completed in February 2021. It was then exhibited in China in the same month. The project faced challenges in machining the complex internal structure of the chair, but the team overcame them to bring this innovative design to life.
Pad offers a practical and space-saving solution for both homes and public places. Its unique folding mechanism and use of teak wood make it a standout piece of furniture. Whether used for entertaining guests or in large public venues, Pad provides comfort, functionality, and a touch of elegance.
Shaohan Yang's Pad design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2021. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Pad's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.
With Pad, Shaohan Yang has created a chair that not only saves space but also adds a touch of sophistication to any environment. Its ability to transform from a flat sheet to a comfortable chair makes it a versatile and practical choice for modern living.
